After a year in Lyons in studying mathematics, Boulez moved to Paris and entered the Conservatoire. He studied harmony with the composer Olivier Messiaen and showed particular acuity in music analysis, taking a first prize in that subject in As an alternative to the then-familiar principals of Neoclassicismthe young French composers looked to the twelve-tone method associated with the Second Viennese School.

Boulez was particularly vehement in asserting the importance of twelve-tone music. Total Serialism and Indeterminacy The initial focus of these young composers who also included Karlheinz Stockhausen, Luigi Nonoand Luciano Berioamong others was the maximum possible control of musical elements. They saw such control as the only way to reinvent and revitalize what they viewed as a moribund and corrupt musical language.

Boulez explored the integral serialist approach in his works Polyphonie X for 18 instruments and Structures I for 2 pianos. Not surprisingly, however, this ideology of extreme control provoked a backlash — even among its main proponents — toward the release of control. In Boulez entered into an agreement to place his musical and literary manuscripts with the Paul Sacher Foundation in Basel, Switzerland.

In Octoberthe large concert hall of the Philharmonie de Parisfor which Boulez campaigned for many years, was renamed the Grande salle Pierre Boulez. It is home to a new Boulez Ensemble, made up of members of the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, the Berlin Staatskapelle and guest musicians from Berlin and around the world. Boulez's music continues to be taken up by interpreters of the next generation.

In September the first edition of the Pierre Boulez Biennial took place in Paris and Berlin, a joint initiative by the Philharmonie de Paris and the Staatskapelle Berlin under Daniel Barenboim, in which performances of Boulez's music are set in the context of works which influenced him. The centenary in of Boulez's birth will be marked by concerts, exhibitions and other events.
