Dramatic Gun Cock : The engineer doesn't realize his train is being robbed until Von sneaks up behind him and cocks his shotgun.

Hobos : The gang meets plenty of them on their travels. Hooker with a Heart of Gold : Bertha fits this type when she starts working at the brothel. The Magic Poker Equation : A craps variant. Bertha rolls dice and rolls a nine four times in a row, and what's more, she rolls the same combination every time, a six and a three. Messianic Archetype : Not even subtle about portraying Bill this way.

In one scene the gang hides out in an abandoned Nazarene church, and Bill stands in front of a painting of Jesus. Then, the film ends with the railroad goons nailing Bill's hands to a boxcar. Fanservice : It's a Roger Corman film from The '70s with a gorgeous lead actress, so, yes, Bertha gets nude scenes. I'm sure he needed the work and any experience is necessary to build a career in the film industry.

Scorsese took this cheap and dirty film and classed it up a bit even if it doesn't truly feel like one of his films. It's interesting…. Boxcar Bertha is a bit rough to get through, there were a couple of cool characters, but the narrative is too slow, and it feels like it's not going anywhere.

The editing is weird and jarring, the tone is strange and the shootout at the end is over the top and looks silly. Incredible progression from Scorsese to go from this to Mean Streets in terms of improved filmmaking. Don't get hooked into the exploitation market, just try and do something different". They were words that Scorses definitely took to heart too as his next film turned out to be Mean Streets, and the rest, as they say, is history.

There's very little Scorsese to be found in this, his first studio picture, but a great deal of Roger Corman, its producer, is evident. One of those movies that's been eyeing me from the rental shelf since the earliest days of the VCR, but that I never got around to. It's politically appealing, as all the movies in this genre are, but can't really hold a candle to Corman's own Bloody Mamaor Lewis Teague's The Lady In Red from a few years later.

Scorsese sticking himself into the Corman formula is not an easy fit except when it comes to the last ten minutes of the film. He was clearly still cutting his teeth on some of the action. The film lingers too long on the love scenes between Carradine and Hershey. They are scenes from a movie that wants to be something…. Boxcar Bertha is bizarre.
